Ski Boat Driver’s Award
The Ski Boat Driver’s award scheme (SBDA.) is a voluntary qualification, recognised by the Department of Transport that is similar to the ordinary car driving test. The test is available to any BWS member over the age of 16 yrs and it represents the basic level of competence necessary to drive a ski boat safely. It is increasingly being demanded as a prerequisite to joining clubs or launching at boating locations throughout the U.K. It is also a recognised International Certificate of Competence (ICC) for those wanting to work or drive boats abroad.
The SBDA course
OFFAXIS run SBDA courses on request and which take you through all BWS recognised signals, procedures and safety elements related to handling and driving a powerboat on both inland and open water. A series of practical driving sessions with one of our qualified trainers will enable you to more confidently and safely drive, manoeuvre and moor your boat in all weather and tidal conditions.
The SBDA examination
The test includes both a written paper and practical boat driving assessment, which includes towing a skier/boarder for a few minutes using BWS procedures, also taught as part of the course.
The SBDA candidate’s manual is available from the OFFAXIS Shop and HQ
Instructor Training
Do you want to become a Wakeboard Instructor?
The BWS Coaching qualification is possibly the most respected qualification in the water sports world and the standards to achieve accreditation are high, but very achievable. Any BWS member over 16yrs can take the course, but they must possess the Speed Boat Driver award and also hold a valid “First Aid” certificate.
Candidates must have completed a minimum of 10 hours certified instruction, and also be able to demonstrate practical ability in their respective discipline. Coaching Manuals are available from British Water Ski.
